Q1既然吃素主要是基於慈悲心，為何還要把素食做成雞鴨魚肉的樣子和取葷食名呢？這不是很奇怪嗎？

這是歸類出的最多人的疑問。我想要用兩個角度來說這件事，首先，請想像你是一間素食加工廠的研發人，現在你要用大豆蛋白製成的纖維和一堆調味料，創造出新的食物，你會怎麼做？
捏成圓的，捏成長條狀的，做成扁圓形的……好了，現在要給它起個名字，這下傷腦筋了，誰也不是讀萬卷書又有文學創意的人，要叫什麼名字好？去查字典？去查網路？去做問卷在路上做市調嗎？當然就是圓的叫素丸子，長的叫素雞卷，圓扁形的一切片，唉呀！好像魚排，那就叫素魚囉！
既然這樣，葷食形狀或口感當然就是現成的創意參考來源。素蝦子多像啊？看了多有成就感？香菇頭的纖維不就是素羊肉嗎？蒟蒻做的素生魚片，顏色和感覺更是驚人，至於素牛喃，素肉鬆，素茶鵝，素雞塊………就更不用說了，要發明一堆全新的東西還要配上全新的名字，還要讓消費者一聽就知道你在賣什麼，這可不是容易的大工程啊！

再者，製作者不一定是素食者，也未必理解你吃素是愛動物，他用素材料做成自己喜歡吃的葷食外觀，似乎也很正常呀！也沒有素食消費者聯手拒買仿葷素食，或是上街頭抗議不吃仿葷製品等等鬧的人盡皆知，人家搞不好到現在還非常得意自己竟能做出那麼像的素食呢！

接下來我們換另一種角度來看：素食消費者。
素食一開始真的就是青菜和豆腐，多個豆乾或豆皮……反正就是這些單純的豆製品，想必能變的菜色花樣是很少，料理方式也因為食材緣故，無法像葷食那樣煎煮炒炸樣樣來。有一天突然看到一個叫素雞的食物，真的是素的嗎？老闆打包票拍胸脯，不是素的我願下地獄……於是好吧！買回家吃吃看。
回家一吃驚為天人，調味過的素雞真是好香啊，又能炒又能炸，素料理的變化突然變多了，形狀和顏色也豐富了，看起來還頗能引起食慾！於是再回到菜市場繼續試吃其他的素食加工品，原來叫素魚的真的很像魚，叫素牛喃的還真的有點兒嚼勁，就連氣味都很像但是卻不腥，那麼還沒吃過的這個叫素鴨，大概也猜得出是什麼口感了。

寫到這裡你會發現，假如幾十年前第一批仿葷素料上市時遭受素食者抵制拒買，這些名稱和形狀一定不是現在你所看到的了。但是以消費者來說，他只管那是素食，也許那時候吃素者不見得單純為了慈悲，也有很多是還願或發願，所以素料能做成那麼像其實還造成素食界裡的轟動呢！吃素者誰沒吃過？只要是素的又好吃，形狀或名稱又有什麼關係？

所以幾十年後的現在，素食者會皺著眉頭吃素雞素鴨，嘴裡明明是吃素，心裡卻想著雞鴨魚牛的名稱覺得不舒服？（又或者有人很舒服？）所以接下來我又要問了：你在意的是食物的名稱和外觀還是吃素的心意和養分？畢竟，叫素雞的已經叫素雞了，叫素魚翅的也已經叫素魚翅了，管它做成外星生物形狀或是妖魔鬼怪模樣，素的就符合自己拒絕食用動物血肉的決心，反正只是名稱，做的人也不是我，何必著相咧？
因此看到素食者吃素火腿，你看到他吃的是『素』還是吃『火腿』呢？

不過現在有越來越多的素食者已經拒絕或減少食用素食加工品，因為那是過度加工與化學調味的食物，大家的健康意識抬頭，赫然發現，吃素料可能還會比吃真肉還不健康。於是現在的素料和以前不太一樣，甚至可以自製，但是名稱大多還是相同的，因為這已經約定俗成，我說冰箱裡有素雞塊可以吃，你總不會想成魷魚的形狀吧？
所以對吃素者來講，那些仿葷素食的外觀一點也沒影響慈悲心，反倒是做的太像的，例如蒟蒻做的素海蔘，我看到會害怕呢！（這不是素食者研發的吧？）

現在許多素餐廳研發許多創意料理，完全不使用加工品，加工素料也被素食者視為是較低等的食材喔！如果我發現高級素餐廳用的是市面上常見的加工仿葷素料，而非自行研發的素料，我可會覺得是老闆不用心經營，想用加工品來打發客人呢！這一點不吃素的人應該沒想過吧？
所以對很多素食者來說，管他什麼名字樣子，再好吃的素料只要被發現是黑心參葷的假素食，絕對沒有素食者願意再吃一口的，不信大家可以去做市調啦！

以往老一輩的認為素食不吃素料就沒有東西吃，或是無法做菜，但現在已經過了很多年，新式素料理也被很多人開發出來，所以不吃素料的素食者可是很多的，一股崇尚自然飲食之風早就悄悄在素食界裡吹起了喔！

贝贝与我的肥皂剧

每周两次回娘家，其实主要原因还是他。我的最爱。

通常我们（我和贝贝，不然？）会在贝贝的房间聊天20分钟+按摩20~30分钟。。

接下来的十~二十分钟通常都要上演以下“肥皂剧”。

我：贝，姐姐要回家了。

贝：（掉头转身一骨碌躺在我的包包 = 生气）

注：贝贝从来不喵喵叫，因为他不承认他是猫。所以我不可以用“它”要用“他”来称呼我的宝贝。

我 :贝！转过头来看姐姐。快点。

贝：no no. (理都不理我）哼！谁叫你不要住下来陪我。。。

害我一天到晚和黑黑，长尾，短尾吵架，又被妈妈用藤条打屁屁。我：ok, 你头不转我的手机转。（手机镜头瞄向贝贝）

贝：呼！我偏不看镜头。

我：。。。不要这样啦。都快七岁了！

贝：七岁又怎样。。人家不想你走嘛！

贝：不管我怎样伤心，你还是会走的囖。讲这么多有什么猫用！呸。
贝：（双眼放空中）显。
贝：（继续放空）
我：OK lah. 我陪你多十分钟。

贝：你拜几再来？记得不要带哥哥来ho？

我：ｏｋ！没问题。

通常我们两姐弟一人一猫会继续“磨”到妈妈说太夜了催我回家为止。

其实是因为贝贝不适应我的新家才住在妈妈家的。。我何尝不希望每天一早起来就可以抱抱他。sob.

Breaking my durian-break

Yes, today, i broke my "no-durians-for-3-weeks-vow".

After having our tao-huey at Geylang Lor 19 Rochor Beancurd (梧槽豆花) XL and I crossed over to Lor 15 to "visit our favorite Uncle's Lam".... XL told him we wanted to try durian kiahs today.. he gladly chose for us 20 durian kiah!!! one for $1 only!! .. Kumpung durians are organic, natural and non-GM... Unlike the 50cents per pc durian kiah that YT bought last week, these were quite big... some even have 6 wedges and about 30 seeds..

Xl and I only managed to finish about 5 durians there. We packed one big tupperware for Chris & HK, and two more boxes for ZC and YT.... Look at the lovely heart-shape-shell on the right.. !!

While opening and transfering the rest of the durians to the boxes, we tried one seed from each durian...all of them had their unique taste, some bitter ones, bitter sweet ones, not so bitter ones, sweet ones, too sweet ones, milky taste ones...

Not all durian kiahs we had were tasty but we enjoyed all the fun!! Afterall, they are so cheap...

我家有只爱吃榴莲的猫

没错。我们家除了人人爱吃榴莲；连猫猫都不例外。两天前有人送来榴莲放在厨房几天都没人吃。今天回娘家前决定把榴莲放进tupperware带去给妈妈，还有猫猫吃。。

我的贝贝嫌榴莲臭，一粒都不赏脸（可能是怕吃了发胖吧。嘻嘻~~）

贝贝：榴莲好臭～～～臭到我都有点晕晕。。快拿走！！！

长不胖又长不大的 Deh Buey (短尾)是黑黑的小妹，它非常爱吃榴莲。以前不让它吃，它就守在冰箱外等了又等，真好笑。今年已经12岁了样子还是像小猫。妈妈放了一粒苦甜的在地上。瞧！它吃得津津有味。。。

Deh Buey : " 看什么看!! 没看过爱吃榴莲的猫 meh.."

Was at Eastern Highland Vegetarian Bakery shop (new Geylang East outlet) and saw these....

$2/each (small loaf) ; $4 /each (big loaf).

I bought 2 small ones and we shared one at Yuan Yuan Thai food shop, we even let the Thai Chefs and the lady assistant try a bit of the charcoal bread... they said nice too ..... The bread looks hard and bitter but it is actually soft and taste a bit sweet.. lovely~~ after our Thai dinner (previous post), we walked back to the shop to get few more.. Haha..

By the way, just FYI all other small breads are selling at $1 per piece,

till late July..got durian bread also leh

Tonight we finally tried the Thai Papaya Salad ( $6 ) recommended by other vegetarian bloggers... very healthy and refreshing dishes...

Boiled kale with oyster sauce ($6)
Lots of veggies : pomelo leaves, baby corn, beancurds, curry leaves, 金针菇, straw mushrooms etc....
百吃不厌的Green curry $6

Marinated "Pork belly" ($6)
spicy, sourish, crunchy, crispy ... 口感一级棒！

Today was already my 7th or 8th trip to Yuan Yuan Thai Vegetarian shop since they opened in April.

I think i am addicted to the dishes there... so far tried only 10 out of the 93 dishes... coz i keep going back to the old dishes i ordered... haha.

虚惊一场

Was watching news at 11pm when i heard my neighour knocking my door (coz my doorbell spoilt). When i opened the door i saw smoke engulfing the whole corridor, and the smoke came from everywhere and i could not open my eyes (so pain!) .... My neighour told me be prepared in case we need to escape... and imagine we stayed 16th floor and must run down by stairs (Never Never take lift if there is a fire) ... we went to inform other neighours who were totally not aware of the smoke coz their windows are all facing the other side (same as mine)... We looked down and saw police car and a fire engine but not much crowd. I think a lot of people were asleep.

So we decided to stay put but left the main gate open in case we need to run. 15mins later the smoke gone and i went down to take these two photos. The SCDF people refused to tell me which floor/unit caught fire and asked me to talk to the police instead. I later overheard from someone staying on 26th floor there was thick smoke coming out from the rubbish chute.

Lucky it was 虚惊一场.

Hubby, who is in Ipoh tonight, got so worried when i told him "don't call me, there is a fire and i need to run!" . Coz he happened to call my mobile at the wrong time, when my eyes could barely open and all of us were about to run down by stairs. Saw 6 missed calls from him later.

冰冰凉凉来消暑

天气太热来个冰冰凉凉的post 吧！

朋友们总是不了解为什么我一天到晚喝咖啡，吃榴莲，吃泰国餐，又迟睡，却不常见我发热气。其实我的秘诀很简单。我每天（特别是六七月）吃了早餐，我一定会风雨不改的到楼下的药材店喝一杯 60cents 的菊花茶（或一罐 正中平的泡篸菊花茶）清凉，排毒又消暑。。每隔几天我们也会喝一两粒新鲜椰子水或来几个香甜可口的椰子Jelly （下图）

冰冰凉凉不甜不腻口感极佳只不过价钱贵了点（一个$2+）

Durian break... (end June ~ Mid July 2009)

I thought of declaring a "Durian Break" from tomorrow, after a heavy durian makan session with Calvin and Kifa at lorong 15 just now...

But the moments i stepped in my kitchen, i saw these!!!!!!!! Hubby bought my favorite Durian-kiah (small durians or kampung durians) .... not one bag, but F.O.U.R. big bags.... !!!

The durian-kiah is this small.

During our dating days, we used to drive all the way to Ipoh highway to buy these kampung durians (non-GM products) , from those sarong clad malay uncle's stalls (along highways). And we didnt buy in pieces, we used to buy them in hugh baskets... then when the night comes, both of us will sit on the swing, enjoying the late night breeze... (at his Ipoh house) and slowly savouring each creamy and bitter durians... romantic hor.. if u don't mind the smell lah..

But but but ... NOT now.. i have enough durians past 18 days!!! May be its time i make durian rice, durian muffins, durian puree...

Guess my durian break will have to wait till we finish these tiny durians... which is mid/late July.... the durians are unopened, so they can be kept for few days/week...

So, friends, family members, colleagues, neighours, please do not invite me for any more durian session till mid July ok?

We ordered 6 durians and 3 coconut juice. Durians were quite bitter but Kifa prefer sweet ones... ended up have to tabao some for Kifa mama and YT...

贴心的“童画”

她爱猫，也爱画画。完完全全遗传到她念美专的小阿姨，只要你给他笔和纸，他都能自己消磨好长一段时间。前天晚上，我们都在上网没空娱乐她。后来发现她自己一个人在客厅画画和写信。她写了一张给弟弟，两张给我们。。。好乖！

第一张：

右边是YT, 桌上有一颗榴莲和one seed of 黄色榴莲，还加上一句“苦甜的哦”。

左边当然是她的宝贝姨婆：我。

第二张：

她说：你们在Hug Hug ！！！

她还加上："Must love each other! I am your Boss you must listen to Celine Ang, The Boss.."

缘缘素食斋 ~ 吃素真的好幸福

芽笼27巷的缘缘素食斋开店至今不到三个月我们已经拜访了6~7次。。因为老公和我都太爱正宗泰式料理。。。何况价钱公道，不收服务费,不收消费税, 两人三四道菜加饭再加两杯又冷又酸的酸柑水也不过二十块钱左右。今晚，老公又说想念酸辣汤和黄梨糙米饭。。

所以我们又来了！哈哈。。。

今天又每到必点的甜青咖哩(Thai Green Curry) $6

Luv its lemon grass and coconut flavours. Very good with plain rice!

不到半小时。。。哎呀！！又忘了点很多人大力推荐的 Papaya Salad....

可爱hor.. ！！！上周末和几个童年玩伴到吉隆坡shopping时不小心在LOT 10看到这两双超可爱的鞋鞋。。。回来后告诉老公还被他“训了一顿”哈哈！他说这么喜欢为什么不买还说我一年半前买的Croc左边已经破了一个大洞还天天穿去喂猫去bugis去tampines找贝贝。。丢他的脸。。可是在目前这个到处大裁员经济超级不景气时叫我买一双RM280++的东西我会内疚的哩。。老公知道我不常买鞋，一买到喜欢的又爱天天穿，穿一两年，穿到破还不舍得丢掉。。。所以一般和他shopping时，看到我很爱又耐穿好质料的东西他会坚持要买。。

好啦！我们下次去KL 时再买就是了。到时可能还可以给Celine买一双和我一样的。。

A very crucial business meeting at Bedok was delayed for 1 and half hour. With ample time to kill, i decided to drop by this cozy place at Siglap to give myself a sweet treat before the "2 hours+ battle" ..

U will know why i love their Siglap outlet so much when u scroll down. And what's more today is Tuesday and the waffles with whipped cream is only half the price!!! The first time i tried my first Gelare in Perth 12 years ago...

So cheap that even these 2 little girls (P2 or p3 the most) from Katong Convent can afford it too!

I always choose outdoor seats coz i love watching the ceiling fans, If only my house's ceiling is that high.
Fat hope. Simply love the sight of this.

Sunday afternoon, while i was having my "all girls out/makan gathering" at Toa Payoh Sizzler's with my childhood friends (knew them since my kindergarten/primary school years), my creative man at home came out with this unique way to air our hello kitty comforter!!!!

When i reached home in the evening , i saw this!!!

We sleep in aircon room every night. During the colder months (Nov~ March), we use our thicker comforter with cover and after2 or 3 weeks, we will just remove the cover and wash/dry them using our washer cum dryer.

Nights are so warm nowadays and we have been sleeping in our romantic wedding hello kitty comforter since April ! (Those who came for our housewarming will find this bed familiar heheh)... only problem with this hello kitty comforter is, the cover can not be removed and the only way is to clean it is to send it for drycleaning....if we dryclean it every month, it will cost us a bomb, hubby found a free and effective way to sanitize it... Haha... not only we have a fresh and sunbathed comforter every night, we only need to send for dryclean once every few months...

I love the smell of the sun... See, who say west-north facing house is no good?

Weather is so hot these days so i decided to have a fruity lunch today!!! Apple, rock melon, water melon, pineapple, honeydew, mango, kiwi, papaya!!

8 types of fruits in a square container... and i simply luv the color combination!!!

No wonder i stayed so high energy till 6pm!!

My fellow vegetarian readers, if you can't find vegetarian lunch near your workplace, try a fruity one!!

A high carbo (been hoon, rice, bread) lunch always makes us feel sleepy and bloated,

but today my fruity lunch totally energized me and i was so efficient the whole afternoon!

We took a late night stroll at our old estate (visiting old neighours) last night and ended up at Geylang lorong 15 again (part of my plan hehe!!) so we chatted wz uncle n bought some durians and those yummy pinky dragon fruits, papaya and banana from him..

I love the pink dragon fruits so much that everytime i station at Gateway east office, i will make sure i buy a piece of the cut pink-flesh- dragon fruit from the basement office canteen. I don't like the white flesh version.

So hubby said get 4 pieces of the pink ones but i looked at the price (OMG!!! 1kg for $5, = 2 pieces, if 4 pcs = $10), i told him just get 2 pieces first, if really sweet, come back for more.

The pink dragon fruit is more costly as compared to the white flesh version ( i think coz the white flesh version is not sweet and almost tasteless.. hehe) , i love the shocking pink color flesh, its natural sweetness and rich nutrients (rich in vitamins C, in fiber, phosphorus, calcium etc), it also helps our body to excrete toxic heavy metal and lower cholesterol and blood pressure. If you have not tried it, get one piece first. Choose the more rounded and heavy ones, they are usually sweet and juicy.

We finished all at one go... so sweet!!!!! ... i enjoyed it while reading the arrest details of mas selamat.. ha!

The durians we got last night were so-so.. they are sweet but not bitter.. Uncle said "Be patient lah..." coz 3 more weeks to go before we can enjoy lots of bitter, firmer and 3 for $10 durians. We got the 3 pieces for $20. I still prefer the bitter ones.. Will go for their bitter ones wz hk, chris, xl and zc hopefully late may/early june..

I wonder if Mas salamat loves durians too..

獨居翁掉茅坑貓兒喊鄰來救

台南縣歸仁鄉獨居老人劉永輝，兩天前如廁時跌落茅坑，幸被他飼養的流浪貓發現，跑到鄰居郭高抄家「喵！」叫不停示警，因而獲救。當時他已無意識，葬儀社準備料理後事時，他卻奇蹟甦醒，緊急送醫後仍在觀察。

這起「流浪貓救主」事件，昨天在歸仁鄉武東村傳開，村民嘖嘖稱奇。他們認為，劉永輝（六十八歲）是三級貧戶，且獨居，能死裡逃生，是因他長年餵食流浪貓，才獲貓兒「報恩」。
郭高抄說，昨天中午十二時卅分許，劉永輝平日飼養的一隻流浪貓，突然到她家「喵！喵！」叫不停；她循著貓的腳步，在劉家屋後石綿瓦牆壁下的縫隙，發現劉倒臥在糞坑內，下半身服裝不整，研判是如廁不慎掉入茅坑，趕緊通知村長葉平賢前來處理。葉平賢說，他和郭高抄看到劉永輝時，劉已奄奄一息，多次喊叫均沒回應，一度以為已斷氣，難過地通知葬儀社人員；但準備搬運身體時，發現劉的身軀仍在動，再仔細看確還有氣息，緊急請歸仁消防分隊送醫。

劉永輝經台南市立醫院全身斷層掃描，除身體虛弱，也有腦出血現象，仍有生命危險；昨晚已轉送新樓醫院持續觀察。葉平賢說，劉永輝領有公所清寒補助，有時也拾荒貼補家用，言語表達略有困難，但很有愛心，常將剩菜給不請自來的十餘隻流浪貓吃。十八日晚間，鄰居發現他失蹤，若不是流浪貓「通報」，也不會發現他已掉進茅坑兩天，村民都希望他早日康復。

Story dated back to 6 and half years ago : when an engineer told me he saw a "gold" color kitten (xbb) alive and meowing sadly next to his dead mother cat (hit by dropping brick, died instantly).. i thought xbb was the sole survivor... then a neighourhood fellow stray cat feeder told me xbb actually has a sister but "living" in another "drain" behind Phoon Huat Baking supplies shop... i have always wanted to take her photo to show my readers... finally got a chance!... she is prettier of course (my xbb is Handsome!) .. but slimmer as compared to his well-fed well (aka, not slim) well-protected brother xbb..

How my stray cats beat the heat..

Weather is so hot these few weeks, my mum reminded me many times to provide each stray cat a bowl of fresh water everyday... I also try putting one extra big bowl under benches or corners of the buildings (NEA people, don't come after me, i change their water everyday!!!)

Stray cats stand the greater risk of getting heat exhaustion or heat stroke caused by excessive dehydration as compared to domestic cats. So, if u are kind at heart, please offer a bowl of water to a stray cat near you. My mum said she is so worried for the stray cats coz she suspects drain water is tainted with poison or chemical due to THAT issue, i guess a lot of people out there would be using the quickest and cruelest way (by pouring chemical or whatever they can think of) to kill the mice, so stray cats will be affected if they drink from the drain (very likely if they can't get access to clear water) So please, do help save the harmless cats. Tap water from public toilets/markets also fine... God Bless you for your kind act.

Futomaki (Fat/thicked-rolled-sushi)

I was on half day leave (sorethroat, running nose) this afternoon, but since i don't like to take afternoon nap, i decided to get myself busy. I wanted to clear away the days-old japanese cucumber, half carrot, 4 sheets of seaweed and leftover sesame seeds in the fridge.

And 35mins of "hard work"" (Cooking rice 15mins, cutting of ingredients 5mins, rolling sushi 10mins.. clearing of the mess 5mins) ..... produced 21 pcs of lovely, thickly cut sushi : 6 pcs for 2 fotang friends, 3 pcs for myself, 9 pcs for Hubby's dinner, 3 pcs for his tmrw breakfast.. ..

Hubby will be so happy later when he sees this tupperware-full of futomaki in the fridge. Last night, he just hinted me i have not made sushi for him for more than1 week! Eh.. thought he just told me he was sick of eating sushi not long ago?? Haha..

Last saturday after picking up Celine from her mummy's workplace, Annie yibo and ML yibo brought little Celine to her favorite Bugis Junction for breakfast and some shopping... and guess what we saw at BHG Toy's department..
They look so cool! They look just like toys but they can actually produce "real sushi"!!! O... so cute, lucky the little girl never ask us to buy for her to "play", but the yibo is so tempted to get one of them if not because of the price ($39.95++) per set.

For more than 10mins, i stood there, watching the how-to-use-me-to-make-pretty-edible-sushi videos..

Celine, on the other hand, having a great time, on her own, riding her favorite horsie at a Game section next to Toy department... (She is born in the year of horse.)

So happy to discover this Vegetarian shop at a corner of Geylang Lorong 27 ! (same row as YES Natural)

Heard the owner is a 60-year-old Singaporean who owns a chain of Thai vegetarian restaurants in Thailand..The owner has been a vegetarian for more than 30 years and all his chefs and staffs are vegetarians too but most people have not heard of this shop coz they just opened 2 weeks ago (03 April '09) and diners are not supposed to take any photos of their Zao Pai coz the owner has not officially announced their presence in Singapore... (1 lady stopped me fm taking photos! Hmmmp!)

aiyo ... why like that.. i just want to help you promote.

Anyway i was allowed to take photos only for the " the food we bought and .... the food menu list"".. hahaha..

We ordered 4 dishes + 4 bowls of brown/white rice + 2 cold lime drink = $26. No GST/ service tax.

Price range : S$ 4~~ 8 per dish.

"Paht Thai" noodles with lots of fat bean sprouts and nuts...

Fried Basil with dragon seaweeds ( I like it so much but the rest said so so only)

Marinated Thai style Vermicelli (tung hoon) with lots of veggies We asked the Thai chef to make our dishes "extra spicy"....
Shiok!!! is the only word i can use to describe the spicy dishes we ordered esp the Tom Yam soup..

Woo...esp on a super hot sunday.
But we only tried 4 out of the 93 dishes listed on the menu... let me have your feedback if you have tried other dishes..

Note : They will be serving Thai Steamboat v soon... once their specially-made-steampots arrive Singapore!!!

Walk a cat?

See what i saw at (opp) Geylang East Libary last week... A man "walking"a cat? I usually see people walk dogs in Singapore, but A CAT!!! First time !!! Anyway this very friendly man loves cats and he owns a shop at the corner 1 min walk's away from the O-ah-jian coffeeshop..his wife and sweet daughter are also die-hard cat lovers, like me!!! And we even shared our photos (stray cats/pet cats) for the next 20mins ... hehehe.. Remembr to take a peep at him (The cat, of course) if u are going for the o ah jian stall nx time.

If you are owners of such kawaii Totoro bento boxes, i think u will bring bento to work/school every day. Happen to see these unique bento boxes here.

I wonder why the Bento culture is not pupular here.... May be Singaporeans still prefer to eat at hawker centre/food courts at lunch... Hubby and I prefer to wake up 20mins ~30mins earlier, cook some rice (or rice from previous night), make 2 or 3 rice balls, wrap them with seaweed or prepare some simple cheeze or egg sandwich with fresh veggies or a fruity sandwich.... Outside food not only costly but greasy and lack important nutrients... too heavy lunch makes us sleepy in the afternoon, don't you think so?

My favorite circuit road Vegetarian Oh-ah-jian ( fried oyster) stall has moved to Geylang East Blk 121 coffeeshop(w.e. f. 01 Apri 09)! Read Hengkai's post for more details. It was definitely good news for me since the stall is now so much nearer to when i live. It is located just opp. (the entrance) of Geylang East Library and only 5mins walk from Aljunied MRT. This afternoon, i dropped by the stall on my way to the Library, i told uncle i want a $2 plate fried oyster!! Hmm.. crispy outside, hot and soft inside... For the sake of my expanding waistline, will ask uncle to make mine less oily next time.... hehe..

I can't bear to see such banners, put up by worried and heartbroken pet lovers... I was one of them few years ago and as expected, it was a heartbreaking ending that i don't want to recall... I know exactly how terrible the feelings of losing a pet, be it cat, dog or rabbit. My heart goes out for the kind souls and responsible pet owners.. they really treat their pet as part of their family... losing them is like losing a family member.... knowing the chance of getting them back alive, uninjured is slim... they never give up.

Animals can't tell you who their owners are and where they lived... unlike lost children who will be alerted by the Public and police and there will be islandwide search... Dogs and cats can't talk... and they run the greater risk of being run by cars or beaten ... many of them hide inside the deep and dirty drains for days without food and drink... haiz...

What's inside the hearts :

Japanese kanpyo, Japanese cucumber, Carrots, mushroom floss, Pine nuts, Japanese sesame, Japanese sushi vinegar.... !No one will add pine nuts in sushi except ML!
YT said must take a photo of mysleepy face and the sushi in the box.

Mr Lee, my first customer, is a very wise gentleman in his 50s. He has been a vegetarian before i was born and he told me he has not tasted a vegetarian sushi so refreshingly tasty like mine! (AWWW.. feel so flattered hope he was not merely saying that to encourage me to continue this business lah) . After knowing the actual size and the rich contents inside the sushi, he told me to sell him 3 piece per box for $3 to cover the expensive japanese ingredients... .He said people will pay for the quality!!! He said he doesnt want me to lose money and won't be making it again after his order. What an interesting and cool man! He wants to place another 50 boxes for his coming 52th birthday but i told him i will be busy during that day.... also making each heart shaped sushi manually is a lot of work, i doubt i can make 50x3 = 150 pieces one night... if one day i can sell vegetarian sushi full time may be possible hor. haha..wait, till i have a pool of regular customers ok... can wait?

Before i was even ready...!!

20 boxes for first order is a good start! A blog reader whom I have not met has been encouraging (more like persuading to me... sorry Mr Lee) me past 2 days to accept his order (He already transferred $60 to my account!!) , i decided to give it a try but only on an adhoc basis, may be one or two orders/ per month.

Then suddenly i remember i didn't even have a namecard for my sushi so quickly i designed a very simple one (above pic) plus some stickers (below pic)... and sent them for printing and i got my ai xin sushi namecards and stickers in less than 1hour!!! See, now I got what i need to start a business yeah!!!! Ok Ok i know it is not a real business but i have the right to dream mah.. hehehe. Who knows i may make it big one day (like real) .. anyway i need to have at least a namecard to begin with... not pro but act pro. Ahem..

After doing a a very quick " research" around Bugis Junction, Fortune Centre, and Aljunied area, i decided to tentatively set the price as below :

I didn't mention "Vegetarian" on my namecard coz i think non-vegetarians will like my tasty, healthy and affordable sushi too ... a friend told me the price is set too low since i am using mainly japanese ingredients (70%) and the preparation is hard work, i told her since my sushi is shaped in a "heart" and my main purpose is to promote healthy eating /vegetarianism, i must make sure everyone can afford it.

To all pure vegetarians, rest assured that the ingredients are 100% vegetarian, and each sushi is lovingly prepared by a happy vegetarian - me.

J.pops are pre-packed and u can't change the flavours..Last night, the sweet hubby bought a box of j.pops from Bugis Junction to cheer up his moody wife.
The moody-for no-reason-wife, after gobbled up almost half of them, with a cup of coffee (as recommended) became a happy wife again!

Remaining ones are my "reward" for this big boy..

(Of course, he also gobbled up all except the sausage donut - right column 2nd piece from top)

I would say the J.pop variety box is v value for money (S$10.50 for 24 mini donuts) and the taste and the fillings are as good as the normal size donuts. Just hope they will remove the 2 er xin de sausage donuts from the pack!

Online Sushi business?

My sweet sweet merciful hearts...

This morning i received some enquiry from a stranger about my heart shaped sushi bento i made for hubby (Hmm.. not bad i didn't know my blog has the potential to generate income!), the person suggested to me to sell 5 pcs/a box for S$3.00 on an adhoc basis with a minimum order of 10 boxes... (Via online) .. i haven't got time to work it out whether it is a business worth doing since i am using costly Japanese ingredients (Jap seaweeds, mayo, rice, sesame etc)... i may not earn much esp if l have to deliver sushi to the customers...

I remember few years ago fotang participated in a vegetarian food fiesta at KL and our heart shaped sushi were sold like hotcakes (sold out in less than 15mins).... But i also remember vividly (wiping cold sweat) the sleepless night of preparing the ingredients and cooking the rice and cleaning up the "aftermath" (piled up plates and pots, sticky knife and spoons, messy table)... haha... lucky that time, i have Peiyu, ET etc for help... ET's daddy even rented for us an apartment for one night so we can use the kitchen....

I love making sushi but only on a very small scale basis eg for hubby's bento, quick dinner for two and occasionally when i am free (coz making heartshaped sushi is very time consuming since i only have one heart shaped sushi maker which is no longer selling in Singapore or ebay.sg or elsewhere) Just like baking, i can only make myself do only when i am free, when there isn't any pending housework at home and i am not rushing anywhere (more like a hobby) but if i want to start an online sushi business, i have to make myself do whenever there are orders coming in.. Another crucial question..Will hubby agree? He hates seeing the kitchen messed up and basin piled up with used utensils ( We dun have a maid at home, you know haha) .. Thinking hard...

Well, regarding the sushi business, i may give it a try one day since i believe this is one good way to encourage more people to eat healthy vegetarian lunch/snack/quick dinner if they have to stay late in office. Provided I am given at least 1~2 days advance notice to get the ingredients and plan my schedule.

But then does that mean i have to start a new blog for this sushi business? Well, one thing at a time.

Sorry I have been MIA for few months. U know lah, i am in P1 already, and since I am in the afternoon session, i have to stay at popo house from sunday to friday.. I am still adjusting to longer school hours, new subjects, new activities, new schoolmates, new teachers.. now no more nap time, unlike childcare days, only recess time but quite fun also can eat and play with new friends. Yibo said no matter how busy, also must at least show show face here occasionally..

Sago Gula Melaka dessert

Hubby has hinted me many times the Gula Melaka (below pic) bought from Malacca few weeks ago are getting "spoilt". C'mon lah i was not born yesterday i know Gula Melaka if kept in a fridge can last for months. LOL.

Few days ago, i was going thru the recent Malacca trip photos (aka the dessert parts hehe) and suddenly craved for some dessert too so i secretly made his favorite dessert while he was having a nap, to give him a surprise!! But it was afternoon when i made this, the market downstair has closed so have to make do with this Harmuni coconut milk (i recommend freshly squeezed-fresh coconut milk)...

Gently stirred them with a spoon.. hummmm.... smooth, slurpy and simply irresistible...

That man finished off two bowls in 5mins...

He said shall we make again this sunday and he promised he will wake up v early to get fresh coconut milk from the market.. Well, i am fine since there are still a bit of gula melaka left..

Nice to eat, simple to make.. can someone get more gula melaka for me next time u go Malacca?

Sago Gula Melaka Recipe

Ingredients

1 pack of sago about 300g+, Gula Melaka (Palm sugar) 150g (about two small pcs shown in the abv pic),

150ml of water, 2 tbsp of brown sugar, 250ml of freshly squeezed cocconut milk (from wet market)

Preparation
Add sago to a pot of boiling water, Stir frequently to prevent the sago from sticking to each other... the sago will float to the surface and become transparent when cooked. Strain and rinse with cold water 2~3 times to remove the starch. Pour them to a jelly mould or any container. Chill for at least 45mins.

While the sago is waiting to be set, cut the gula melaka into smaller pieces, put them in a small pot and add about 150ml of water over small/medium heat, add in 2 tbsp of brown sugar, stir till the sugar is dissolved. Keep aside to cool the gula melaka syrup. (Heard u can even get those ready to serve gula melaka syrup at NTUC but not sure about the quality and the sweetness). Once the sago is set, scoop some into a small bowl, drizzle the sago with the gula melaka syrup and fresh coconut milk and they are ready to be served....

Happy Birthday.. Clara!!

I was supposed to get a square or rectangular cake ard 1kg but i walked from Marina Sq ~~Citylinks ~ Raffles City for 1hr+, 9 out of 10 cakes i saw are of round shapes and the 10th ones were overpriced ($50+) ..

Lucky i found this at Raffles City Basement, from my favorite bakery shop, Four leaves. At least still within my budget ($38)... but only those lucky ones got to eat them.. sob.. lol

We celebrated Clara's 11th Birthday at fotang today (Her actual birthday falls on 30th March)

Today (28 March) is actually Grace's birthday but she couldn't join us... missed you, our dear friend..

Photos taken 3 days before he met the accident @ 25 March 1am

His two legs were run over by a car driven by a drunken man at 1am midnight at one Sims Drive Coffee shop... he managed to slowly crawl to a safe place with his two front legs dragging his other two injured bleeding legs ... Those who saw the accident were all in tear i heard. Coz this little abandoned kitten has brought lots of cheers to the coffeeshop past few months, he was so mischevious and playful.... but from that fateful night, he will be handicapped for life. He can never sit and fold his hands(legs) like the above photo anymore.

He was tramatised and in pain and couldn't eat or drink last night i visited him.... I held his front legs and told him to be strong and we will take care of him till he recovered (to be able to walk using two front legs)....What really moved me is ... the coffeeshop people are willing to pull some funds to bring him to a vet... even though for sure he can never stand up again.... he will have all our love till his last days... The coffeeshop people told me, they didn't like cats till they saw me showering this abandoned ugly looking (he was!) kitten with so much love past 5 months.... now Xiao Ma became the coffee shop mascot but he has to meet with this unfortunate accident. Xiao Ma peeping at Aunty Xiao Mei... imagine he was so healthy and happy just couple of days ago..

My friends said they envy me a lot coz YT usually comes home around 7~8pm to have dinner with me (unless he has urgent things to rush at site). I told them coz he doesn't want to miss the sunset views lah.... even though we didn't manage to get the highest floor (26th) during house selection, views from our 16th floor living / dining area are still marvellous.... Too bad we only have a cheap digicam... if not, we can share the million dollars sunset views with you.

After reading my earlier "Durian" post, their popo told their mummy she craved for durians so this afternoon Celine family drove all the way from Tampines to Lorong 15 to try Uncle's Ah Lam's durians. Too bad, even $5 per piece were sold out. Celine's parents asked for 6 pieces of ""3 for $20" grade but Uncle said he can only sell them 4 pieces coz the the quality of the rest is not good enough. If only the rest of the durian stalls' people are that honest.

Heard that their popo is happy with the durians that Uncle selected.... Happy! So next time, no need to go for the expensive 4 for $90 grade. Remember Uncle wants to see u guys again this June...

When it comes to durians, we are so spoilt for choice! Coz my house and our fotang are just a street away from the popular Durian street (Sims Ave/Geylang Lorong 7 ~21) .. Die-hard durian lovers like us are just too 幸福..
But everytime we will end up visiting this Lorong 15 stall. Haha...Tonight, Uncle finally told us shyly his name is Ah Lam... and this time, he even posed for me when I told him i want to blog about him!!

Even his 3 for $10 durians are good! Usually we will go for the cheapest range which is 3 for $10 to beat recession... But this time, he told us the cheaper durians are not so good and told us to come in June, Yah he is THAT honest and humble that's why I like him so much!!!! Since 4 of us have been craving for durians for a week after we tasted XL's durian cake bought by Chris last saturday! It will be a torture if we have to wait till JUNE...! we told Uncle to select for us the $5 / pc range.... and WOOOOO..... all the 9 durians he chose for us were so good that even Charlie who hates everything bitter loves them!!!!

幸~~福~~ neh...Since there wasn't anymore $5/pc durian for me to tabao home for YT... Uncle Lam said he can choose some good Champedak for me to bring back. One big tupperware of fragrant, sweet juicy Cempedak only $14!

XL knows YT loves durian so she put some good bitter ones inside the Cempedak box to give him a surprise! HK, Chris, we ate your share too...
Sweet-looking ZC Charlie said must show our tongue-licking yummy face, this is the best i can lick.. This is the first time we brought Charlie there...
Wow...Bitter sweet ones are still my fave.. We ate so much! Uncle Lam's Durian Stall is located at Lorong 15, next to a tall temple.

Who said Business tea must always be held at boring hotels or cafes, if you have sporting and fun colleagues like me, a humble makeshift stall will do.. One of the Japs in my team is due to fly back to Hokkaido tonight...someone suggested go bugis for teabreak so i asked what he wanted to eat most.. his reply is D-U-R-I-A-N!!!! I still remember when he first came to Singapore few years ago, he will scream and jump and refuse to come in office everytime someone bought Durian puffs from Goodpark hotel. Now everytime his family came to Singapore, he will bring them to Geylang for durians... Haha... Well, durian is my fave too so i gladly obliged and brought him and 4 other japanese managers for mountain cat durians at a makeshift stall next to Albert Centre Temporary hawker centre besides Bugis MRT.

p.s. As expected, the moment we stepped in, the poor Japanese GM screamed ''KU-SAI ....(Smelly!!!) ." After so many years, he still can't tahang durian smell.

We celebrated XL's birthday at Fotang last night. Chris, even though still recovering from her bad cough, has made a sweet effort to order XL's favorite Durian cake .... It was sooooo Durian...haha !! And that made us crave for more durians.... durian uncle at lorong 15 told yt n i the best durians will come only in June... but i dun want to wait till June... i want them NOW! By the way, Goodwood Park durian fiesta is ON.. till Ang... time to get fatter and fatter!

It was a so-last-minute makan gathering, my fault. But i am still happy that at least 5 of us can make it !

Oop! Now then i realised no ladies photos, no group photo, no birthday girl photo!! Haha! Well, we ordered many dishes and the food came one after another and most of the time, we were busily appreciating the yummy dishes.... But nvm, you can still see two handsome "boys" face in the first picture.. Haha... I would say the Ala Carte Buffet at LingZhi Liat Towers was value for money, not to mention one diner gets to makan free with the wan bao's voucher!! And the boys seem to like the tim sum a lot esp Charlie! We only had two rounds of orders as each portion were too big for 5 persons and we were told they were the smallest portion! Anyway, i am so glad to know that the birthday girl enjoyed it too... that's more important right? I really enjoyed dining with nice friends~~~~

My homeless friends

Dedicating this post to my homeless friends at Sims Drive/Aljunied

Hubby likes to nag me every night before i leave home at 11pm (to old house) to meet my homeless friends. Well, i have been feeding them past few years and it is my responsibility to continue taking care of them (even after we moved to new place) till their last day. Furthermore, it is only 25~30 mins walking distance/ 3 bus stops. At 11pm, the weather is cooler and less traffic on the road so less risk for the stray cats. I am not afraid of darkness coz i am wearing my mi le fo pendant. Wu Bai Wu Bo Bi. Hehe...

If Hubby continues nagging, my reply will always be " Why? U want the cats to die of hunger issit?? You try not eating for 3 days lor! You can't expect my homeless friends to gather at old house then cross 3 big roads, one overhead bridge over KPE then walk all the way to our new house to take their dinner right? Then they still must walk back somemore??? " It takes my 2 legs to walk only 25mins but my 4 legs feline friends may need 4 hours to and fro old house->new house->old house..

This is ah hui. She likes to "scold" me If i am late (See her mouth..)

She is quite fat, but she asked me to mind the angle.

This is xiao chen. He likes to cross a big road just to frighten Ah hui and Tiger.
Tiger gets double dosage of my love and attention coz his only sibling died tragically last year, half body run over by a stupid Honda and upper body survived 4 days. Hurt me dearly to see his brother died slowly. If i go into details on his brother's last days, i think you will cry too...

Xiao Bai ( The white tiger)
If u ever take bus at the bus stop nx to Aljunied MRT, u will notice him.

(See below photos) Xiao Mei so angry with Xiao bai (the white tiger @aljunied MRT) for eating her food.
She dares not show her anger coz Xiao bai is about double her size.
Take note of her "expression-less" cat face.... she was so mad actually!
I find her very pretty so i name her Xiao Mei.

But she makes me worried a lot coz she likes to cross over to a patch of green (between the bus stopping lane and main road) to rest and cross slowly and gracefully back when she senses no bus coming.

The newest boy, Xiao Ma.

When i found him meow-ing in a small drain, he was hungry and frightened. When i first met him, he was so slim. He has a long, horse face, hence his name. Xiao Ma.

He put on some weight after feeding him for 2 weeks, but face still long. He is very cheerful and well-loved by nearby coffeeshop aunty and uncle.They praised him and said he is a well-behave boy! When i was not around, another aunty cat, Xiao Hua (i can't find her photos in this PC) helps me take care of xiao ma.

They are so lovable right? I find them more lovable than kids. At least they won't cry, throw a tantrum, won't scream) I have some more cats to show off but i have no time to upload them. As compared to my XBB, XHH, Baby.. these cats live in very harsh and cruel environments, they have to constantly watch out for town council people, big dogs, cat-haters, cats killers, traffic, fast cars... I want to give them as much love as i can when they are alive.

They are both my darlings but now they are taken care by my mum and became my mum's pets. They don't see eye to eye with each other, they will fight, bite, scratch and chase each other everyday so mum has to lock XBB in master room and XHH in the common room most of the time. Mum said the main reason is both have been jealous of each other and fighting for my attention no wonder i always seee XHH (hiding under the sofa) staring hard at me sadly when i sayang and massage XBB... and vice versa. Anyway from now, i will try to be sensitive and not hurting their feelings when i sayang and pay attention to one of them. Haiz... having two "kids"".. not easy hor.

It was a pleasant surprise to know that The Whole Earth has just opened one new chic vegetarian named Naive.... - Nice name, Naive - absence of articiality. True enough, i don't see any mock meat on the menu!! Monkeyhead mushrooms are their specialty and they do it in many other different ways, If you are a monkeyhead lover, I A.M!!! You shouldn't miss it! And it is located at 99, East Coast Road, opp Katong Mall, few shops away from a Katong Pet shop.

They have an interesting ritual called the "Blessing of the Sesame Seeds" where each table will be given a pounder with black and white sesame seeds in it and ask you to pound it. It represents the blessings in your life.... You can even choose to sprinkle the crushed seeds onto your food.

LT, my vegetarian buddy, will be working at Katong from this week. She was just too happy to be told that Naive is just few doors away from her office!!

They have 2 kinds of 3-course set lunch at $9.80 and $13.80 :

A) $9.80 set lunch comes with one soup of the day, XO Shanghai Tang (Braised mushrooms with rich savoury XO sauce) came with some lightly flied kailan and a bowl of Olive rice/ Congee/ Steamed white rice.

B) $13.80 set lunch comes with one soup of the day, one monkeyhead mushroom dish (4 options) and a bowl of rice/congee/steamed rice.

We chose set B with Enchanted Forest and Spice of Life.

Enchanted Forest - Braised monkeyhead mushrooms with wolfberry, chinese Tang Gui herbs and broccoli... Lovely!!! LT and I loved their tender and juicy mushrooms... the texture is just too addictive... Must try!!

Spice of Life - monkeyhead mushrooms "sauteed with spicy kungpo sauce and peppers" - tasty but too little monkey mushrooms hahah!

Soup of the day - Si Chuan Cai Tang"Olive Twist" - my favorite Olive rice.

We ordered another side dish named Penang Rendang "spicy pan-fried mushrooms with steamed buns" --- the rendang sauce was a good match with the steamed buns and the mushrooms very tasty indeed. A tad too salty but i still find them v tasty esp with the steamed bun. We even sprinkled some freshly grinded sesame on them... Hmm..
"Why never bring me go! " Hubby saw the photos last night and screamed... Like me, he is also a fan of Whole Earth's monekeyhead mushroom (Satay) surely he will love Naive! We will be going next sunday!! Woooo!
